Sanctuary Olonana Lodge is situated near the Mara Triangle, a protected area within the Greater Masai Mara that’s managed by the local Maasai community. The Mara Triangle aims to minimize poaching and improve infrastructure by building a safe and secure ecosystem that supports both the natural landscape and the surrounding communities.
Nestled between the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania and the Oloololo Escarpment, Sanctuary Olonana Camp is set in a breathtakingly beautiful location with stunning views across the vast open plains of the savannah. Situated alongside the Mara River, Sanctuary Olonana Camp is wedged within the middle of a game-rich area that welcomes lions, elephants, hippos, gazelle, giraffes, hyenas and plenty more.
Sanctuary Olonana Camp hosts 14 glass-sided suites which are measured at the spacious size of 130 square meters each. A permanent structure that’s far, far away from the canvas construction of a traditional safari camp, Olonana Camp features clean lines and organic materials for a comfortable stay in contemporary lodgings. Along with a king-size bed, each suite has a comfortable daybed on a private deck that allows you to relax both inside and out, taking advantage of the stunning scenery as you indulge in a moment’s rest. Olonana Camp prides itself on attention to detail and guests can take advantage of stocked mini-fridges, fantastic African art and luxurious marble and slate en-suites with a large bathtub, double vanity and rain shower.
Floor-to-ceiling glass doors reveal the magnificent Mara landscape, making Olonana Camp the perfect place to enjoy the natural landscape in a luxurious setting. Overlooking the breathtaking natural wonders of the Mara Triangle, including a flowing river and forested area that hosts an abundance of wildlife, Olonana Camp is a real-life sanctuary. Each suite is tastefully furnished with nature-inspired furnishings that connect with the natural world of the Mara.
Two of Sanctuary Olonana Lodge’s 14 suites, the Geoffrey Kent Suites, include an additional en-suite bedroom that’s perfect for families with children. The two family suites feature a wraparound private deck and private infinity pool that overlooks the river plus a private lounge with a dining area where exquisite meals are prepared by a personal chef.
Sanctuary Olonana leaves no stone unturned with an attention to detail that’s second to none. With a fantastic spot alongside the river, Sanctuary Olonana is the ideal game-viewing location. The river also attracts plenty of other species for a refreshing drink after a day spent in the scorching sun, allowing guests to see the best sights from a safe distance and an exceedingly comfortable spot.
Sanctuary Olonana Lodge provides its guests with the opportunity to experience a game drive. One of the most thrilling and exhilarating parts of a trip to Olonana, a game drive allows guests to see Africa’s most beautiful wildlife. The camp’s experienced guides will navigate an all-terrain vehicle through hidden spots where you’ll see a variety of animals in their natural habitat. With open safari vehicles, guests are delighted by all-around views that offer unrivalled photography and viewing opportunities in this unique ecosystem. Travelling through the ecosystem, including an acacia-studded savannah, riparian forest and woodland that attracts over 300 bird species, a game drive is a fantastic way for guests to spot the vibrant wildlife that lives in the Mara Triangle.
Guests of Sanctuary Olonana Lodge are also encouraged to experience a cultural visit to a local Maasai village where they’ll learn all there is to know about the traditions and customs of the community. On a village visit, guests are delighted to hear about the medicinal plants, the importance of cattle and the stages of life for all who live here. Accompanied by an experienced Maasai guide, you’ll interact with community members and get involved with activities including hut building, warrior dancing and fire building. During term time, guests can also visit a school to learn about Africa’s education system and the life of a Maasai.
Last but by no means least, guests can enjoy floating gently above the vast open plains of the Mara Triangle in a hot-air balloon safari. Observe Africa’s most ferocious game from high in the sky before landing to relish a delicious bush breakfast back on the ground with exotic fruits, homemade pastries and a glass of champagne – an additional cost applies.
Tripadvisor comments Sanctuary Olonana Safari Lodge
One of the best camps in Masai Mara. Great location, amazing food, excellent service and staff, most importantly, modern rooms. Its a place to keep visiting. Tranquillity and breathtaking views from the doorsteps. Note that the showers are outside (enclosed), you shower naked outside and surrounded by wilderness. Intimidating at first but totally part of the experience and nice when you get into the swing of it.

My friend and I had an amazing experience at Sanctuary Olonanna. The individual homes were spacious and well equipped, with a soaking tub and large shower. We were right along the Mara River where we saw hippos, monkeys, baboons, elephants and zebras from our deck. We were delighted to have weights, bands, and yoga mats to exercise as most days are seated in the jeep. The food was outstanding as were the outdoor areas, including a sunset boat ride and drinks and apps in the bush. The entire staff including the guides were top notch. Would highly recommend.
