One of the most exclusive safari lodges in the Mara ecosystem is located in a very special part of the Greater Mara area. Angama Mara is located near the Mara Triangle, a section of the National Reserve that is managed by a non-profit conservancy company established by local Maasai communities. By combining forces to manage the area, the Maasai reduced poaching, improved infrastructure and started community run projects to support conservation efforts. 'Angama' is Swahili for 'to be suspended mid-air', a completely fitting name for this safari lodge.

The lodge is situated high up on a ledge overlooking the Great Rift Valley and the Mara plains. The view is unrivalled and truly captivating. The lodge is slightly larger than most of the safari accommodations we feature, however the 30 safari tents offered by Angama Mara are split up into two twin camps ensuring a very private and intimate feel. Both sections of the camp have identical communal areas. What makes this camp extra special is that they offer a very flexible timetable for those going out on a game drive. No need to choose between an early morning and late afternoon game drive, the camp allows you to create your own safari schedule.

The two separate camps share a swanky central pavilion. The pavilion features an infinity pool where guests can enjoy a refreshing dip in the waters and a gym with a folding glass front for those who want to catch a few workouts during their stay. The pavilion also houses a Maasai design studio and a shop, a library and a deck perfect for taking in the captivating view. Each party of guests is assigned a personal 'butler' to help make their stay extra special. However, all of the lodge's staff are extremely welcoming and make it a point to see to it that all guests’ needs are met. This includes optional in-tent massages and nail treatments (surcharge applies).

Angama Mara's tents are simply stunning and resemble open plan appartements. They feature an entire glass façade allowing an uninhibited view of the Mara plains. The tents are spread out upon the Oloololo escarpment to ensure each guests privacy and a 180-degree view of the surroundings. Inside the tents you will find polished hardwood floors, king-size beds and lovely décor. The lodge is known for its attention to detail. Each tent has electric blankets available for those nights when it gets chilly and a fully stocked personal bar with drinks of your choosing. For privacy, you can lower blinds over the glass front... leave them up if you want to take in a breathtaking sunrise come morning. The view is also visible from the sitting area, the shower, the freestanding bath and the tent’s private verandah.

Angama Mara food experience

Guests can enjoy an outstanding international menu accompanied by a selection of fine South African wines. Breakfasts come complete with freshly baked pastries, fruit and muesli and a variety of cooked breakfast options such as a Swahili omelette and scrambled eggs (with or without halloumi). At lunchtime you can dine beneath the trees. Bush lunches generally include a selection of fresh salads and tasty sandwiches. A wide variety of international cuisine is offered for dinner. Lantern-lit barbecues are generally held in the forest, but dinners can also be served in the communal guest area or in the privacy of your own tent. Guests are invited to serve themselves at the open bar whenever they wish to do so.

Activities at Angama Mara

The Mara Triangle offers guests year-round excellent wildlife watching. Given the abundance of game in the area, the lodge doesn’t only offer early morning or late afternoon game drives. It allows guests the freedom to plan their days as they wish. Scenic sundowners and bush dinners are the most memorable way to wrap up the day after an exciting safari. The lodge also offers guided walking safaris through the Great Rift Valley. Hot air balloon safaris and visits to local Maasai villages are available at a surcharge.

Tripadvisor comments Angama Mara

Don’t know where to start or how to end this review. Everything, Everyone and The Lodge itself is spectacular. If your considering don’t consider, just book it and you won’t regret it. The views, the rooms, the surrounding, the game drives, the staff, the food was above and beyond amazing. I worked with Tamsin arranging everything before our arrival and she was wonderful to work with. Sophie was our game driver and she was amazing! She knows the Mara like the back of her hand and could tackle some of the rain soaked tracks, where others wouldn’t dare to venture. She is a true professional in the Mara. The rooms are stocked with Gin, Whiskey and wine which is all included. There is a beautiful pool with views.

We had a wonderful stay at Angama - truly amazing with one of the most incredible views imaginable. The Angama service is extremely personalized and excellent attention to detail is given. The rooms are spacious and beautiful and we were lucky enough to look on to the 'Out of Africa' hill as well as sweeping views of the Mara plains below.
